‘World War Ireland’ at the National Library focuses on the unique aspects of the Irish WWI experience. The exhibition highlights Irish involvement in the Battle of the Somme – film and graphic panels explore the front line experiences endured by the men of the 16th (Irish) Division and the 36th (Ulster) Division at the Somme, in the context of the Easter Rising and its aftermath. Original collection items demonstrate the complex involvement of individual Irish families. Related events in July include ‘Words and Music from the War: an evening of words and music’ relating to WWI and screenings of the film ‘Battle of the Somme’ (booking required for these events). The NLI’s flagship exhibition for 2016, Rising, continues at the National Photographic Archive in Temple Bar until 31 October.
