Hi, my name is Fionn. I am a music producer, sound designer and audio-visual artist as well as a Royal Television Society award winner for sound design on the animation "My Sister’s Nature". My project "Life in Blocks" is a short avant-garde film piece that takes inspiration from the expanded cinema movement. Expanded cinema pushes the boundaries of traditional filmmaking and embraces a variety of multimedia elements including video, photography, sculpture, and sound. My film, "Life in Blocks", looks at the life of a twenty-three-year-old living in Dublin exploring different moments or “Blocks” in the artist's life. This was created using a variety of found footage that I filmed over the course of several months as well as field recordings from moments of my life. The music and sound within the film looks to both subvert and enhance the emotions that are being portrayed within different parts of the film, creating a sense of both unity and unease. Throughout the project I was inspired by expanded cinema artists like Mark Leckey, whose films "Dream English Kid", "1964-1999 AD" and "Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore" which offer a zeitgeist into Leckey’s life as well as creating moments of nostalgia through memory. Other multi-media artists like Bruce Nauman helped me better understand how to portray emotions like fear and intrusion through his pieces like "Poke in the Eye/Nose/Ear".
