I am a Wicklow-based artist who is focused on realism and figurative painting and drawing. My work explores the concept of 'rest' in today’s busy, over-scheduled world. The hectic everyday reality of my life inspired me to explore this timely theme. 'Tranquillity' is a series of oil paintings depicting people asleep during the day. The figures are resting in daylight, at a time usually associated with work, unapologetically embracing their need for sleep. I wanted my paintings to emphasise the importance of rest and the need to take time out. The large scale and soft colours evoke a sense of calmness while the sunlight creates beautiful shadows, highlighting the warmth and softness of the duvets. There is a feeling of pure comfort and serenity, with the larger-than-life scale of the figures enveloping the viewer in a sense of tranquillity.
