My work, "Borderline" revolves around the idea of neuroticism which is a personality trait that represents our susceptibility to negative emotion. This idea is explored through the character of Line, who has to override and overcome their own neurotic design. 'Borderline' is a visual interpretation of the noise of neuroticism. It explores the subversion of our own self-destructive tendencies and the unorthodox approaches that we adapt to our faulty design. We must confront the corroding noise of our uncertain lives and overcome the doubt and uncertainty that exists in all of us.In this Do or Die situation Line must override his framework and survive on pure instinct. 'Borderline' incorporates the visual styles of pop art together with grunge music. Neurotic noise is represented through the infinitely mass produced semiotic collages that convey suffocating hopelessness. Using monotoned captures of traffic signs and machine parts focuses in on the dehumanized and conformative themes that brings about neuroticism. These urban imageries mesh together with the grittiness of grunge and punk both in theme and sound, creating an imperfect and distressed visual aesthetic alongside the bold psychedelic colour schemes. To further ascertain the street and neurotic pop style, Borderline makes use of panels, Ben day dots, stencils/silhouettes and gritty textures which are superficially manipulated in a 3D space while retaining it’s 2D qualities to create a detached and jarring sense of expression. Panels and silhouettes are used as alternatives to the traditional use of sequential storytelling that exists in contemporary animation.Borderline is an attempt at rejecting our oppressive and stagnant designs through encompassing the counter movement roots that exists in pop art and grunge.
