My body of work explores the theme of flowers which transcends their mere decoration. I am drawn to flowers for their different structures and forms. Their delicate petals act like material folding and overlapping in various ways with vibrant gradients, textures and details. My work explores these forms and draws attention to things often overlooked. Working with acrylic and oil on canvas, every layer of my process is visible from ground colours and outlines to the more finalised areas. By upscaling the forms and creating larger than life depictions, my work is abstract yet it remains representational. Within these floral realms, the flowers can be viewed to be either appearing onto the canvas or disappearing from it. Colour and vibrancy become important for both the flowers and bold backgrounds. The forms are painted with an attention to detail as the folds, veins and movement of the flowers are captured. The charcoal drawings become botanical studies focusing on areas of pattern and mark making. The darkness of the charcoal contrasts greatly with the bright paintings while the added watercolour provides cohesion.
