I’m Sophie Fallon and I’ve always been drawn to visuals. My parents raised me around older art, music and film which left an impact on me being that some of my biggest inspirations are of the past. I look to Old Hollywood, gothic style, new objectivity art, David Lynch and Serge Lutens, as well as more modern artists like Lady Gaga, Nick Knight and Szilveszter Makó. The creative method I’ve used has changed over the years, where in the beginning my bedroom was taken over by a white backdrop draped in fabrics with varying textures, as well as a stepladder used as a tripod and a light stand, often heightened by books piled high on each other. Though I tirelessly worked to achieve my vision, I rarely showed anyone the finished products, but my parents knew that photography was important to me. For my 20th birthday, I received a Nikon D5100, which I used mainly for images of nature, graveyards and urban spaces. Fast forward to college where I was handed a Canon DSLR and pushed to engage in teamwork. Now, post-college, I can recognize the progress I’ve made, not only in my work but in my ability to give direction and work in a team setting to create my vision. From getting the right lighting, the right furniture, the right clothing and the right subject. I want people to be able to look at my photos first without the backstory, and to be able to conjure up a story of their own, because I like to aim for my images to resemble film stills and capture an emotion or a vibe. Then once they read the backstory, I'd like them to feel a deeper connection to the photo and the subject of the photo.
