My work is centred around the human experience. I unearth what it means to be a living being. Exploring one's connection or lack thereof, to the body and its surroundings. I look at the idea of control. Control over present and past. The longing for a space between. An escape from reality, a fantasy of sorts that doesn't truly exist. Fractured and caught between reality and fantasy. I am motivated by my own personal feelings and emotions that come along with being a human. The transition from childhood to adult life. The shifting focuses of life. The uncertainty of it all. I gain most of my inspiration from mundane everyday experiences. Small menial moments that shape a life. I paint in response to my own emotions. I wanted to capture the raw and complex moments that are a part of being truly alive. Moments of uncertainty balanced by clarity. I focused on children this time in a person's life full of wonder and awe, yet so vulnerable impressionable to the outside world. Focusing on the idea children can experience things adults cannot. My work becomes a dream of sorts a longing for a place that doesn't exist. A jumble of distant memories warped by time and experience. A space where times past and dreams of the future collide creating a dreamscape. I create a reality or moment in time that may feel familiar yet has an uncanny strangeness to it. Caught in a singular moment – forever stagnant. Inspired by the human desire to go back to a place or moment in time to which you can never return. Now forever altered by life's experiences, one can never return to the blissful unabashed naivety, joy and wonder of youth.
