Bad habits are deeply ingrained behaviours that can disrupt our daily lives. My practice investigates both my own compulsive habits and those of others, such as biting, itching, pulling, and picking at nails, lips, hair, and skin. The work exaggerates these gestures until harm is caused to the body and in doing so exposes the body’s vulnerability through signs of bleeding, irritation, and torn flesh. Through my work I explore themes of the grotesque body and the concept of abjection. Abjection refers to anything that is simultaneously repellent and magnetic, evoking a visceral reaction of disgust, fascination and unease. I primarily create my work through the media of photography, moving image and printmaking, particularly silkscreen. My ultimate goal with my practice is to create unsettling imagery that makes the viewer feel discomfort as well as reflect on the tensions between attraction and revulsion
