In my final year of university, I became increasingly interested in the use of paint to play with perception. "You Are Not A Robot", my most recent body of work, challenges our cyber-stained present by bringing into reality elements which are only found on the internet. CAPTCHA pop-ups are of particular interest due to their illicit collection of individuals’ data to turn a profit for technology companies. By bringing into reality elements which are only found on the internet, I encourage the viewer to slow down and critically consider these overlooked forms. I give these re-appropriated images a texture and physicality not found on screens using oil paint on unprimed cotton muslin. My work uses time as a partner, not an obstacle. Pop-ups, like the digital landscape at large, are fleeting, while oil paint insists on slow deliberation. Echoing the digital decay, link rot, and online moderation which erase information we often deem eternal, the oil paint will slowly degrade the fabric over time.
