I am a graphic artist and illustrator who works predominantly with grit, texture and explores the more spooky side of life. My process combines various digital and analogue techniques to achieve striking graphic visuals.Hypnagogic States is a collection of work that both explores and deconstructs the experience of sleep paralysis through the lens of having and then losing control. Through a combination of various textural analogue and digital practices, a gritty and dark atmosphere was achieved that further emphasises the restrictive and icy feel of this experience. Using a selection of interviews, studies and my own personal experience I was able to capture an authentic but still stylised look into the phenomenon. The set includes the main Hypnagogic States publication featuring a 1987 study on sleep paralysis, info cards, stickers, a riso mini zine and a risograph-printed comic publication titled “these are just objects of restraint”. The 62 x 62-inch tapestry was another piece for the Hypnagogic States project. It was an intuitive choice to create an object associated with the setting where sleep paralysis takes place — the bed. The tapestry or blanket showcases chains, a demon head, and other illustrations found in my publication.
