‘Absent Presence’ is concerned with the human condition in a digitised society, and explores, in the context of Covid, the absent presence of family and friends, the individual in isolation, waiting, and feeling under threat.
Concepts of transparency are reflected in my work, sometimes using the silhouette, photographic negatives and empty public spaces, to denote an absent presence.
My work explores light, including using the cyanotype process to allow images to emerge and create a presence. Illuminated foil and movement creates a shadow presence in my video. Dystopian images emerge by inverting photographic images. The process of layering with acetates and the use of segmented Japanese Gampi paper act as a filter through which the viewer mediates my work.
I am interested, not only in what is present but also what is absent from that presence.
