As a media designer and visual communicator, I have spent the past year immersed in a comprehensive investigation of the subject of lavatorology. For those unacquainted with the topic, lavatorology is the little-known yet fully legitimate study of ablutionary environments, more commonly known as bathrooms. This project is called “Lexicon of Lavatorology”, and it is my ode to the everyday experiences that unfold in public bathrooms. In my design practice, I am drawn to unconventional spaces and perspectives, whether it is the environments themselves, the social rituals that take place within them, or the ways in which design subtly shapes how we navigate and understand them. The project content is informed by both personal experience and contributions from revered experts from the field of lavatorology, resulting in a textbook-style design rich with illustrations, diagrams, insights, and ponderings. With riveting chapters such as ‘A Study in Toiloitering’ and ‘The Artistry of Latrinalia’, Lexicon of Lavatorology aims to investigate, elevate, and reframe the meaningful, and often absurd, role that public bathrooms play in our lives.
