Clean, functional, and tactile are words that I would use to best describe my design philosophy. My work follows a theme of intriguing forms and tactile surfaces, which I believe allow people to feel a deeper connection to each material and stimulate positive interactions as they use my furniture. My approach to furniture design is centred on making with a purpose. It’s a challenge that I set myself to help guide my work on a sustainable path, which ensures that my furniture follows a viable and eco-conscious process. Recently, I completed my final year project at ATU Connemara, which required the integration of Connemara Marble into a piece of furniture. Through making this piece I explored the possibilities of Connemara Marble and pushed my own abilities to create something special and innovative. The project grew from an initial idea to emulate a natural break in stone into a feature of my design, hence the piece is called the 'Split-Stone' cabinet. Strongly influenced by mid-century design, the simplistic form and clean style of the piece creates a plain canvas for the marble to standout and be admired. The cabinet is designed to be a statement piece with a strong focus on functionality, allowing it to be adaptable to suit the user's needs. This is not just a practical cabinet but a showcase of the beauty of Connemara Marble in an untraditional way, which is what I feel makes it so unique.
