At the Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane, a display of work from the permanent collection, ‘The Artist as Witness’, takes as its starting point the theme of artistic, social and political flux engendered by the 1916 Rising. Artist Jesse Jones’ ‘No More Fun and Games’ transforms a gallery into a cinematic experience focusing on feminism in Ireland. Sir John Lavery’s painting, ‘High Treason: The Trial of Roger Casement, The Court of Criminal Appeal, 17 and 18 July 1916’ moves from the King’s Inns to become the centrepiece of this exhibition. In ‘Our Kind’, Alan Phelan cinematically imagines a future for Roger Casement had he not been executed in 1916. His film is set in 1941, where Casement is in exile in Norway with his former manservant and now partner Adler Christensen.
Artist as Witness: until 2 October;
Jesse Jones: until 26 June;
Roger Casement: 10 March – 2 October;
Alan Phelan: 10 March – 2 October
