Our actions as consumers in the present will deeply affect our futures.
Antibiotic resistant bacteria are becoming an increasingly prevalent global issue. This work examines individual consumer responsibility in enabling the development of antibiotic resistance through conscious disconnection and passive consumer behaviour regarding the realities of the modern livestock farm and our consumer choices. The idealisation of the livestock farming industry in Irish media advertisements has consistently enabled consumers to dissociate from our consumer responsibilities.
The work is a physical representation of the threat of antibiotic resistance. These animated, macro forms, a hybrid from resistant bacteria forms and ox tongues, exist between reality and imagination – hybrids that confront the consumer with the consequences of their actions - seeking to reconnect the viewer with the reality and responsibility of antibiotic resistance as a direct consequence of practices linked to farming
