Alexandra Caccamo chooses some examples of exceptional botanical art bequeathed to the National Botanic Gardens by irascible horticulturalist William Edward Gumbleton.

William Edward Gumbleton (1840-1911) was a member of an old Irish family whose residence was the Belgrove estate, located 6km east of Cobh. He matriculated from Brasenose College Oxford in 1858, after which he spent some time travelling around Europe studying languages, music and art. He was a cultured man and became quite a ‘critical judge’ of these subjects.
