"Cakes in Space" is a body of work focusing on the conditions of 'chronophobia' (extreme fear of the passing of time) and 'agoraphobia' (extreme fear of open space). My paintings channel feelings of being trapped and confined in life, and of longing to live life to the fullest without constriction, in celebration of being alive. To signify and express these wants and limitations I use oil paint on canvas to paint symbolic motifs, such as the birthday cake in space, to represent the passing of time and years; the interior of a spaceship denoting the embodiment of that confinement and an inability to stop the passing of time. Thematically, there is a repeated yearning to partake in the party of life in my paintings. While also acknowledging that stepping out of the spaceship is to risk death in the universe. However, the fear of the consequences of staying inside and watching the years pass by is stronger - ultimately making those steps a final resolve.
