I am a Belfast based artist working with sculpture, ceramics, stained glass, lens, and performance art. My work is inspired by Irish artist, Jesse Jones, in particular her 'Tremble Tremble' exhibition and Emily Hesse's 'The Witches’ Institution (WI)' exhibition. Both art works recall the historical figure of the witch as a powerful symbol of women’s resistance to patriarchal and capitalist systems, and prompts us to rethink our relationship with the earth that sustains us. My installation for the Belfast School of Art Degree show, titled ‘Caim’ explores humans’ innate connection to the natural world by using the figure of the witch as a feminist archetype. While merging fundamental ceremonial magick practices with an interactive installation, my work aims to provide a sacred space to cast a spell. I ask the audience to engage in a letting go spell by writing on a piece of paper unhealthy attachments, relationships, or fears. Once cast into the cauldron the audience can begin to expel these afflictions from their lives. Involving the general public in the spell I aim to challenge the patriarchal and cultural bias of witches as wicked beings and dismantle fear of this practice. The four elements and Spirit are represented through an art piece at each point of the pentacle. Their presence elevates the protection of the casting circle and the intention of the spell. The sound of birds sings throughout to cultivate a comforting atmosphere and to enhance the connection to the natural world. I welcome the audience to take a deep breath and unwind in this sacred space.
