Using the medium of paint my current body of work is centred on the depiction of the female body, not as a still source but as a functioning medium and an active source. Having researched the historical conceptualisation of the menstrual cycle, I am inspired by the early contributions made towards the Menstrual Art movement, which has been a huge influence in my aim to challenge patriarchal, religious and societal ideologies that have birthed and continue feeding into the negative connotations held towards the menstrual cycle and the physicality of menstrual blood. Through this work I try to diminish the internalised shame and hatred that menstruators have been taught to have for their menses. My concern is primarily with how my painterly materials can translate into drawing connection to the female body as an active medium and the menstrual cycle as the source of life.
