Both an artist and a scientist, my concern is with Nature, particularly the world through the microscope. The Anthropocene is the challenge of our times: burning fossil fuels, pollution and deforestation causing global warming, climate change and species extinction. My response to the Earth Crisis, at present, focuses on the oceans and microscopic plankton in particular. These tiny organisms feed ocean animals, provide half the oxygen we breathe and remove harmful Greenhouse gas. They are being harmed by warming seas, pollution and plastics, affecting ocean food chains. My inspiration comes from electron microscope images. Kiln-cast glass perfectly expresses these jewel-like plankton forms, added silver referencing plankton bioluminescence, seen at night in West Cork ocean inlets during the summer. I also experiment with photography, film and fibres in my installations: the oceans, according to David Attenborough, 'The Last Great Wilderness'. These kiln-cast glass and silver Plankton Form sculptures formed part of my MTU Crawford Graduate Show 2026 installation, Ethereal Ocean. My works were bought for the State Art Collection by the OPW and also by MTU.
