My name is Ben Finegan (she/her) b. 2004 and I am a multidisciplinary artist based in Limerick Ireland. My work is concerned with the ever-changing landscape of the Irish commuter town and its respective city. I draw aesthetic value from personal experience of growing up and living in Castletroy Co. Limerick. For as long as I can remember, the landscape of the town where I was raised has at some point or another been in a state of construction or flux. I find the “fresh” nature of these towns to be fascinating as they have little history beyond the past twenty to thirty years. This interests me because they do not have a completed visual language and subsequently have not been heavily featured in the Irish art canon. The main visual focus of this concept is the skips and general piles of construction materials such as chipboard, MDF, glass and metal. I am concerned with depicting these scenes of detritus from construction sites in paint. As this body of work has progressed it has become interested in a more sculptural approach such as the formation of constructions comprised of found materials from construction sites and skips around the Limerick city and suburbs. This has manifested in heavy use of MDF for constructions/sculptures which will become supports for painting based works. Written word pieces accompany the works on show to act as further insight to the lived experience within this setting.
