I am a visual artist & graphic designer from Belfast, Northern Ireland. I am inspired by traditional art forms and design practices such as printmaking and collage as I enjoy unpredictable and spontaneous outcomes. For my final major project, I redesigned the book 'Metamorphosis' by Franz Kafka. 'Metamorphosis' focuses on Gregor Samsa, a travelling salesman who finds himself transformed into a large insect when he wakes up one morning. Many of the visual references in Metamorphosis refer to Samsa as ‘monstrous,’ and ‘dirty.’ Other visual elements include ‘the walls were stained with trails of grime, and tangles of dust and filth lay here and there,’ These repeated themes within the text inspired me to take a grungy, textured approach with my design. I researched the work of designers including David Carson and Chris Ashworth, pioneers of experimental, ‘messy’ graphic design and Swiss Grit. I feel that this style of design assists in encapsulating the atmosphere within Metamorphosis and the attitude other characters within the book have towards Samsa as it is clear that they feel disgusted by him.
