My photographic practice centers on portraiture as a form of storytelling. I am interested in how photographs reveal the emotional and psychological dimensions of a subject and how domestic and community spaces, together with the objects and the environments people inhabit contribute to the construction of identity, memory and belonging. Working primarily through long-term collaborative projects, I use portraiture to explore themes of resilience, loss and human connection. I am drawn to the ways in which gesture, expression, dress and the material details of everyday life can communicate aspects of a person's history and sense of self. Clothing, jewelry, furnishings, books and other personal objects function as traces of lived experience and carriers of emotional significance. My practice is rooted in close observation and sustained relationships with my subjects. I seek to create photographs that emerge through trust and attentiveness, allowing each person to be represented with dignity and complexity. Whether working in the intimate setting of the home or within a shared community environment, I am interested in how individuals shape and inhabit the spaces around them and how these spaces in turn reflect memory, character and belonging. Recent projects include Tender Eye, Measured Way, a collaborative photographic portrayal of my mother Victoria Crowley, which explores ageing, grief and adaptation in the years following bereavement and limb loss and The D8 Mens Shed, a documentary portrait project examining community and companionship. Across all of my work I aim to make images that are both intimate and unsentimental, honouring the dignity of everyday lives and the enduring strength of the human spirit.
