My practice revolves around the exploration of abandoned spaces and materials contained therein. Urban relinquished provisional spaces such as The Field, NCAD, reveal elements of change and metamorphosis, unfolding and shape shifting across the surface of my work. These meanwhile spaces are yearning to be recovered, standing as sentinels over their own hidden histories. Maps and Found Materials offer an alternative lens through which temporal and spatial connections emerge rhizomatically. This informs texture , tactility, corporeality and colour palette. Materials such as wire mesh, rusted found wire, plaster bandage and paint pierce and soak the skin like structure of the work, creating a surface tension. Materials flow like tributaries through my work, just as people move through the city scape, leaving remnants or echoes of their presence. I incorporate my own prepared, layered surfaces to create mixed media images which can be scraped back to uncover the fragility of overlooked materials. The interstitial space between the layers creates an archaeological site where remnants and echoes of former function and physicality are contained for the viewer to decipher and recover.
