Hello! My name is Salem Anowe Chukwuezi. I am a Nigerian visual artist based in County Meath and Dublin, working across photography, film, and sound. My practice explores themes of identity, community, and everyday life, with a particular focus on the experiences of Black and Brown communities in Ireland. Through my work, I aim to create space for stories and voices that are often overlooked within mainstream Irish culture. I use photography not only as a way of documenting people and places, but also as a tool for conversation, connection, and reflection. My work is shaped by both personal experiences and the experiences of people living between cultures. I am interested in how identity is influenced by memory, family, migration, and place, and how these elements shape our sense of belonging. Through intimate and thoughtful imagery, I seek to highlight moments that encourage viewers to reflect on culture, visibility, and the ways people navigate their lives and communities. In 2026, I was selected for the Judge’s Choice award in the inaugural Taylor Wessing Photo Prize for my work Unseen, yet Always Here, part of my series Covert (2025). This recognition marked an important early milestone in my career and affirmed my commitment to creating work that challenges narrow ideas of identity and representation. As my practice continues to develop, I remain focused on telling meaningful stories and contributing to broader conversations about culture, belonging, and visibility in Ireland and beyond.
