My aim with Cadence was to create a space where movement, wellbeing, and community could exist together in a way that feels welcoming and inclusive. I wanted to move away from the idea that wellness spaces should focus on one specific activity or type of user and instead create an environment where people can choose how they want to engage with the space. As someone interested in how interiors can influence the way people feel, I focused on creating a journey through the building that gradually shifts from active and social spaces to quieter, more restorative environments. Movement became an important part of my design process, not only through dance and yoga but through how people circulate, pause, interact, and experience different spaces.I wanted Cadence to provide dancers with somewhere they could move, practise, and express themselves without the pressures often associated with traditional dance schools or competitive environments. At the same time, the building provides opportunities for yoga, recovery, relaxation, social connection, and time outdoors, allowing each person to create their own wellbeing experience.Inclusivity was considered throughout my design process. I wanted the building to adapt to its users rather than expecting users to adapt to the building. Accessibility, clear circulation, sensory comfort, choice, and flexibility therefore became important parts of my approach. My colour and material palette reflects the atmosphere I wanted Cadence to create. Soft greens, muted blues, warm earthy tones, natural textures, and controlled lighting help create a sense of calm and warmth without making the environment feel clinical.Through Cadence, I also wanted to show the potential of adaptive reuse. By giving an underused 1960s office building a new purpose, the project demonstrates how existing buildings can be transformed into spaces that support healthier, more connected and inclusive communities.Ultimately, I wanted Cadence to be somewhere people feel comfortable arriving as they are, whether they come to move, recover, socialise, express themselves, or simply take time to slow down.
