Following a dialogue that began at Cork Craft Month 2014, four makers from the county will exhibit at the Mission Gallery, Swansea in Wales from 31 March to 26 April. ‘Cork Makers in Focus’ will feature the work of Nuala O’Donovan in ceramics, Tuula Harrington in jewellery, Anne Harrington Rees in basketry, and Lesley Stothers in textiles. Harrington Rees is best known for her miniature baskets, her work showing sensitivity to materials and an ability to work on small scale, which she shares with Stothers. Working with textile techniques such as knitting, crochet, hand and machine stitching, Stothers also works in paper, wire and plastic, deconstructing book formats so that ‘like a journal chronicling a troubled life, it is also a nod to the act of memory and the way it can deteriorate over time.’ The exhibition will be accompanied by a film showing the activities of the wider Cork Craft & Design group. Nuala O’Donovan is the only Irish exhibitor in ‘Sculpture as Textiles; Textiles as Sculpture’, which will run in the Bluecoat Display Centre, Liverpool, from 14 March – 9 May.
