Eight contemporary Irish artists exhibit works that mark the pervasive nature of how recession and austerity has crept into Irish life, at the Crawford Art Gallery, Cork. Created within the last five years, the works can be seen as a critical response to and a reminder of the particular set of socio-economic circumstances in which Ireland currently resides. They question what lessons can be taken from the failures of the Celtic Tiger, at a time when the government and media claim that Ireland is on the cusp of new economic growth. The exhibition is entitled ‘Motivational Deficit’, which is described as ‘the perceived public disaffection with political and social engagement’ and offers an artistic antidote to such a condition.
