Waterford: Ireland’s Viking City’. Now what does that really mean? On a visit to Waterford does one see any tangible evidence for Vikings? What of the Scandinavian raiders of 853AD or the fleet that plundered northern Osraige (modern day Co Carlow) in 914AD and ‘brought great spoils and many cows and livestock to their ships’ at Waterford? What of those Scandinavians that settled and called the place ‘Waterford’, from the Old Norse word Vedrarfjordr meaning ‘windy fjorde’ or ‘fjorde of the ram’ (a type of Viking ship), and whose princes such as Reginald and Turgesius are commemorated in the names of castles.
