‘Bronze into Gold’ at Waterford Museum of Treasures pays tribute to dedicated antiquarian Redmond Anthony and broadens our understanding of the Bronze Age communities in Waterford and the south-east region, writes Mary Cahill.
One of the most assiduous collectors and recorders of archaeological objects in the first half of the 19th century was Redmond Anthony (Fig 2). He lived in Piltown, Co Kilkenny, just a few miles from Waterford City, where his family ran an inn, post office and coaching stop. Anthony also established a private museum to exhibit his collection of antiquities. Visitors were welcomed to the museum, especially to view his custom-made bog oak case where his gold antiquities were displayed.
