In 1812, Napoleon Bonaparte declared, ‘I am a true Roman Emperor.’ This was, at least, borne out in the Imperial Style associated with his reign. Along with painters Jacques-Louis David (1748–1825) and Antoine-Jean Gros (1771–1835), the sculptor Antonio Canova (1757–1822) would help to define the Neoclassical portrait of the First French Empire.
