Man of Aran

James Fitzgerald’s ‘Aran Drawings’ from the late 1960s translate island life into stark visual form writes John M Cunningham, ahead of the exhibition at the Regional Cultural Centre, Letterkenny

Man of Aran

James Fitzgerald’s powerful watercolours are rooted in the legacy of great American painting that harks back to Winslow Homer, and yet, he was his own man, a maverick, who spoke with his own unique voice. Fitzgerald was born to an Irish family in Milton, Massachusetts in 1899. After serving in the Marines during WWI, he studied at the Massachusetts School of Art from 1919–1923, with the American masters, Cyrus Dallin, Wilbur Hamilton and Ernest Major, and subsequently at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School
