While the four artists short-listed for this year’s AIB Prize employ a variety of media to express their ideas, all share strength of impact, says Gemma Tipton

What are you looking at when you are looking at art? How do you judge what you are seeing? By its beauty? Craft? Technique? Its place within art theory? Perhaps you can glean something from what the artists themselves say about their work? These questions, raised in the course of reviewing art, present themselves all the more forcefully when it comes to adjudicating a prize for artists. How can you assess painting alongside sculpture, installation with performance, conceptual art with representational?
