At the Crawford Art Gallery, ‘Conflicting Visions in a Turbulent Age, 1900 – 1916’ examines conflicting visions of WW1, and political and cultural issues, such as the Easter Rising, and Hugh Lane and Terence MacSwiney in Cork. The exhibition features work from the Crawford Art Gallery Collection, as well as from national and private collections. Also at the Crawford, ‘Rakoczy’s March’ (2015) a film by Elaine Byrne centres on two Irish uillean pipers, Leonard Barry and Padraig Carberry McGovern, who perform Rakoczy’s March without any previous knowledge of the score. The march features in James Joyce’s Ulysses, which Byrne uses to explore issues of censorship, nationhood and the rise in anti-Semitism.
Visions: 3 until 20 August
March: until 9 July
