David Monahan’s ‘Beyond Leaving’ at the National Photographic Archive is the more recent expression of an ongoing project, started in 2010 when Monahan documented the departures of over 120 people as they left Ireland in the aftermath of the global financial crash. This work culminated in the award-winning book, On Leaving. Now some years later Monahan has taken a closer look at a small group of these people and working in collaboration with them through photography, Skype interview and video, this show tries to fathom the distance between expectation and reality for the current Irish emigrant.
