Over the course of his career, John Boyd has developed a singular style that hints at complex and unresolved narratives replete with a quiet but profound anguish. As this exhibition at the Molesworth Gallery shows, the people depicted in his work bear a weight of woe on their slumped shoulders. While James Joyce has been invoked by some, the character of Boyd’s paintings, with their existential bleakness and sense of isolation, is closer to the work of Samuel Beckett.
