Dublin: Postcard to Ireland

The RDS Library shows a selection of Eve Parnell’s work – ‘A Postcard to Ireland’ – previously unseen in Ireland. Recently exhibited at the National Maritime Museum at Turku, Finland, these precise, detailed monochrome drawings are in the northern European realist tradition, rooted in Netherlandish art from the 15th to the 17th centuries. Combining conceptual content with strong technical ability, the drawings demonstrate a masterly use of the half-tone in grading black to white. The challenge of these drawings was all the greater because they are drawn with soft pencil on highly delicate tissue paper.
