Cork harbour is fundamental to the character of Cork city and its necklace of small settlements, both spatially and visually. The existence of the deep harbour, coves and lagoons and varied collection of islands contributed to the social and economic development of the city and are critical to its understanding. Central to its role in commerce and exchange, it is also a place of military and naval activity, and emigration ships embarked from the harbour in previous times as well as cruise liners and pleasure craft today
