Photographer David Davison discusses David Cantwell’s intimate portraits of the faces usually found behind the camera

Throughout photography’s one hundred-and-seventy-year history, portraiture has been one of the medium’s most important applications. Portrait collections of people of eminence in the arts, politics and other spheres have featured in books and exhibitions since early times. One such excellent publication (Amelia Stein Photographs RHA, L&R Winter 2009) was the subject of an article in the previous issue of this journal. David Cantwell has adopted a novel theme for his current project; that of photographers who have made an impact nationally or internationally within a range of specialisations on both sides of the Atlantic.
