Early 20th-century fashion was characterized by a rich and exotic opulence. Couturiers eschewed the Edwardian corset, shifting the focus from tailoring to draping. They drew inspiration from a revivalist interpretation of ‘classicism’ with low necklines, empire waists and columnar skirts, and from Orientalism with European interpretations of harem pants, turbans and kimonos. Designers and artists collaborated to create art from fashion and fashion that was art.
