By far the most extensive collection of 18th-century engravings extolling the beauties of Ireland’s ancient monuments was undoubtedly the two-volume Antiquities of Ireland, which bears the name of Francis Grose as author on both of its title pages, dated 1791. Yet, paradoxically, he had comparatively little to do with their appearance, because he died when their preparation was in its infancy – but plenty to do with what led up to them.
