Drogheda’s key position in the 18th-century is reflected in a pair of views of the town, by Neopolitan artist Gabriele Ricciardelli, explains Nick Reilly

Gabriele Ricciardelli’s extraordinary views of Drogheda, painted from opposite viewpoints on the southern bank of the River Boyne, are among the finest examples of Irish townscape from the 18th century to survive in Ireland. The works have gone on display in Drogheda’s new Highlanes Gallery with the rest of the little-known Municipal Art Collection
