Jennifer Goff describes the cultural background to the newly opened 19th-century music room, part of a new ensemble of historic room displays at the National Museum of Ireland

Pitch perfect

A new exhibition at the National Museum of Ireland Collins Barracks displays the furniture collection in a series of room settings. This exhibition traces the development of furniture in Ireland from 1600 through to the present day. There is a 17th-century bedroom with a rare Flemish stand-bed, oak chests and panelling, a refined Georgian dining room and the exuberant style of a 19th-century music room (Fig 3). The music room showcases some eccentric Irish musical inventions.
