For the past twenty years artist Joanna Kidney has been making work that is a continual and overarching inquiry into the mark and line through drawing, painting and physical space. Working across a range of media, the artist explains, ‘I approach all the work as a form of drawing, either as a discipline in itself – a tool for thinking, translation and discovery – or as a springboard to expanding into paint and physical space.’ Kidney’s interests and inspirations are wide ranging and include explorations of the nature of time – the construct that measures everything; the sensory experience; and the interconnectedness and interdependence of all living matter. These ideas weave in and out of all her work and imbue it with an abstract quality and a poetic sensibility. Kidney’s work is open to interpretation and invites the viewer to slowly look and ponder and, in the case of her installations, to experience her work in an immersive and sensory way.
