Patrick Bowe has discovered a set of photographs which document the 19th-century magnificence of a county Wexford castle

It is rare to find such a complete set of unpublished photographs of an Irish castle and its demesne as that which survives for Johnstown Castle, county Wexford. The origin of these photographs, and indeed the date when they were taken as well as the identity of the photographer, is unknown and all that is certain about them is that they most probably survived at Johnstown Castle itself until it was taken over by the Department of Agriculture’s research unit about fifty years ago.
