Before the Storm

By the end of the 19th century the photographic image was increasingly being used to record a rapidly changing society and nowhere was this more evident than in the West of Ireland. The work of the Belfast photographer, Robert Welsh, his Castlebar-based counterpart, Thomas Wynne, and others provide us with a visual view that is as important to our understanding of the past as that of the newspaper reporter, the diarist, the traveller or the propagandist
