Arguably the most successful émigré architect in Ireland since James Gandon, (who also arrived here because of a competition), Andrzej Wejchert first came to Ireland in 1964 to collect first prize in the international competition for the new campus at Belfield, University College Dublin. He had graduated from Warsaw two years previously and was successful in obtaining a rare travel/exit visa which ostensibly enabled him to travel in France to see the great works of the masters although his real purpose was to visit his girlfriend and ex-classmate, Danuta, who had gone to Paris to study
