Barry Flanagan in Dublin

Ahead of the forthcoming retrospective hosted jointly by IMMA and Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane, Enrique Juncosa offers insights into the emphatic shift in Barry Flanagan’s practice since the 1980s

Barry Flanagan in Dublin

Barry Flanagan left London at the end of the 1980s to set up in Ibiza, and moved again to Dublin in the second half of the 1990s. Since then, he has lived in Dublin and has become an Irish national, although he maintains his house in Ibiza

Soon after arriving in Dublin, he generously donated one of his characteristic hares, The Drummer, to the Irish Museum of Modern Art, and a pair of horses to the Hugh Lane Gallery. Both museums exhibit the pieces at their entrances, and in the case of IMMA, outside the entrance, where it has almost become the museum’s emblem. The works are much loved by visitors
