Between James Barry in the 18th century and William Orpen in the 20th century, the Irish painter who made the greatest impact in Britain was Daniel Maclise. He rose to prominence in the 1830s on the crest of the wave of British Romanticism, and during the 1840s and 1850s he was one of the most successful painters of the decorative schemes in the new Houses of Parliament
