In this preview of new work from Charles Harper, Gerry Walker sees an assurance that comes with the artist’s reappraisal of his signature repertoire

Charles Harper’s latest exhibition, entitled ‘Journey’ opened on 22 March at the new Gormley Gallery on South Frederick Street in Dublin. Those who may be familiar with his work will recognise immediately what are by now some of his trademark visual elements. When viewing Harper’s painting one has to be aware of his penchant for visual metaphor. He is introspective by nature and believes that painting is an activity of discovery about the world and the self (Fig 2). In this new body of work we are reacquainted witha wholly reinvigorated repertoire which signals a considered reversion to former preoccupations.
